New Wenceslas Square

The competition design for the new appearance of Wenceslas Square from 2005 by Marcela Steinbachová and Bronislav Stratil is radical. The square is stripped of trees, and the entire surface is paved with a glass-concrete grid of blocks that allows light to pass into a vast underground gallery connecting all the surrounding passages. The proposal was not awarded due to its evident uncompromising nature, but it opened questions about how to work with the historical context of the place, the complex urban surroundings, and the very democracy of the state.
